Post 1920 - the trail goes cold

WW2.jpg

If your relative joined the army after 1920, the chances are that his papers are still with the Ministry of Defence.   If you can prove you are a direct descendant you can contact the MoD for information but you will only be sent a summary and it could take six months or more.

Visit Ancestry.co.uk (FREE 14 day trial) for:

- British Army prisoners of War 1939-45
- UK Army Roll of Honour 1939-45

The following list - taken from the Veterans UK website - shows exactly what is in the public domain. Everything else is still with the MoD.

  • Royal Navy Officers commissioned prior to 1914
  • Royal Navy Ratings who enlisted prior to 1924 and First World War records for the Women's Royal Naval Service
  • Royal Marine Officers commissioned prior to 1926
  • Royal Marine Other Ranks that enlisted prior to 1926
